Calling all Villans! Get behind the Claret and Blue pride of Birmingham by listening to the Aston Villa FC Official Playlist on Spotify.
Villa hold the distinction of being one of the oldest clubs in country, having been formed in the then village of Aston, near Birmingham, in 1874 and being one of the founding members of the Football League in 1888.
Their honours include winning the Football League First Division seven times, the FA Cup seven times, the League Cup five times, and the European Super Cup once. Perhaps the greatest moment in the club’s history, however, came in 1982 when they lifted the European Cup- better known now as the Champions League – after a 1-0 over Bayern Munich in Rotterdam.
The current crop of Villa players returned to the top flight after three seasons in the Championship, with manager Dean Smith delivering promotion in his first season in the dugout. In what was a dramatic end to the 2019-20 Premier League campaign, they narrowly avoided relegation on the final day of the season, finishing one point above the bottom three in 17th place.
Their talisman is captain and Birmingham-born starlet Jack Grealish. The 24-year-old stuck with the club after they dropped into the Championship in 2016, and has been their standout player and top scorer this season, with nine goals in all competitions.
Given the number of top teams that formed in the West Midlands, Villa have a number of fierce rivalries that they are more often than not pitted against every season. The fiercest of these encounters for Villa and their supporters by far is the Second City derby with Birmingham City, with West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers among the other local rivals they face on a regular basis.
