AFC Bournemouth‘s current spell in the Premier League is their first, having been promoted to the top tier at the end of the 2014-15 season. The club were originally formed as Boscombe FC in 1899. The club retained this name until 1923, when they were renamed Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic F.C after successfully reaching the Football League. The club entered the EFL’s Third Division in 1923, and spent the longest time on record there, remaining between the aforementioned year and 1970. This record stands to this day.
The team was renamed again to AFC Bournemouth in 1972, and spent the next 35 years yo-yoing between the third and fourth tiers (barring a brief spell in the Second Division during the late-1980s). However, by 2008, the club was in serious financial trouble. Administration and a points deduction meant they faced relegation from the football league altogether. However, a remarkable turnaround between 2009 and 2015 saw the Cherries ascend from a 21st position finish in League Two to a first-ever appearance in the Premier League in just six seasons.
The Cherries are now competing in their fourth consecutive season in the top tier, and have established themselves as a respected Premier League side. Get behind them now by following the AFC Bournemouth Fan Playlist!
