Wednesday currently sit 15th in the ever-competitive Championship table, six points from the play-offs positions. Currently competing in their seventh consecutive season in the second tier, the Owls will be hoping to better their disappointing 15th place finish last season.
Historically, Wednesday are no strangers to the top tier, having spent 9 seasons in it during the 1990s – eight of which were in the newly formed Premier League. This period saw them finish third in the final season of the old Division One, before reaching both the League and FA Cup finals during the 1992-93 season, only to be defeated in both by Arsenal. Their extended run in the top tier ended when they were relegated at the end of 1999-00 season.
Despite their close shave with FA Cup glory in 1993, Wednesday have previously triumphed in the world’s oldest club competition a total of three times. However, as the most recent of these wins came in 1934, the Owls most recent silverware dates back to their 1991 League Cup triumph, in which they defeated a far superior Manchester United side. Wednesday‘s wait for a major trophy now stands at 27 years.
This weekend, the Owls take on an in-form Norwich City side, whom have emerged victorious from their previous three fixtures. Jos Luhukay’s men will be hoping to end that momentum and begin a push towards the upper echelons of the Championship. You can cheer Wednesday on to do just that by following the Sheffield Wednesday FC Fan Playlist!
