Genre-blending quintet Birthday Card unveil new track ‘Shy Away’

Buckinghamshire-based five-piece Birthday Card have shared their latest single, ‘Shy Away’, which is the latest offering from Notting Hill Arts Club Recordings and is available now.

Birthday Card‘s sound is self-described as ‘genre-blending’ and is attributed to a variety of influences, taking notes from anything ranging from French New Wave specialists Daft Punk and The Supermen Lovers, straight through to more urban touchstones like Kanye West and The Streets.

The band have also released the official music video for ‘Shy Away’ – an aesthetically-pleasing abstract performance video directed by Josh Fletcher (Gabrielle Aplin, Phil Taggart, Adam Ant).

On ‘Shy Away’, frontman Josh Saw draws lyrical inspiration from experiences personal to himself and the band, showcasing his vulnerability through a glossy pitch-corrected vocal.

Musically, it’s a balancing act of their sonic diversity, with pumping bass and drums flirting with groove-based synths and guitars. Produced by Mike Spencer (Tom Walker, Kylie Minogue, Jamoriquai), it’s another future summer anthem from the group, who are certainly ones to watch in 2020.

“It’s a complete privilege for us to be on Notting Hill Arts Club Recordings. The team behind it have worked with some really ground-breaking artists, so it feels really special to be part of this label,” says lead guitarist Conor Richards. “With ‘Shy Away’, we wanted to craft a modern day pop song that channels the anxiety and tension of its lyrics”.
