The Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL) is the UK’s professional ice hockey league. Formed in 2003 following the demise of the Ice Hockey Superleague, it is the highest level of ice hockey competition in the country.

Ten teams from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland currently compete in the Elite League, which is split into two Conferences. The league has representation from all four Home Nations – the only league in any sport to do so. The top eight teams in the overall league standings qualify for the Elite League playoffs.

Each side plays teams in their own Conference eight times (four at home and four away), and face sides in the other Conference four times (twice at home and twice away).

The Elite League post-season is considerably shorter than playoff tournaments in North America; in the first round teams play a two-leg game (one home, one away), and the semi-finals and final take place over the course of a single weekend.

Ice hockey is now the number-one attended indoor professional sport in the UK, and overall it is the third largest winter spectator sport in the UK after football and rugby union.
