The Smoggies currently sit three points off the top of the Championship table, having taken an impressive 22 points from their opening 12 games. Their previous campaign ultimately ended in disappointment when, despite reaching the play-off semi-finals, they were defeated by Aston Villa during their charge to an immediate return to Premier League Glory.

Boro‘s 2016-17 season ended in heartbreak when they were relegated from the Premier League after a single season. Despite the departure of manager Aitor Karanka during the campaign, it was too little too late and a poor run of results saw them eventually finish 12 points from safety in 19th place.

Despite 2017’s heartbreak, Boro have spent a whopping 61 seasons of their history in the top flight, with their most successful period coming between their promotion to the Premier League in 1998 and their relegation from it 11 years later. Significantly, this period saw Middlesbrough land their only ever piece of major silverware, as they triumphed over Bolton Wanderers 2-1 to win the 2004 League Cup final.

As a result of their victory, Middlesbrough entered European competition for the first time. The following season proved impressive, as the team reached the knockout stages of the UEFA Cup and landed a 7th position in the league – a position which guaranteed them European football the following season, too. Boro took full advantage of this, and, in a fantastic run which saw the beat the likes of Roma and Basel, Steve McLaren’s men reached the final.

Despite being beaten 4-0 by the most successful team in the competition’s history, Sevilla, the achievement has gone down as one of the biggest in the clubs history.

Now that all focus is back on a return to the Premier League following the international break, Boro‘s run into Christmas will be a crucial one, which could prove to be the difference between an automatic return to the top tier or a place in the play-offs.
