Wimbledon is the oldest and perhaps most iconic tennis tournament in the world, and is certainly considered the most prestigious. It has been held every year at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London since 1877.
Wimbledon is one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments, the others being the Australian Open, the French Open and the US Open. Since the Australian Open shifted to hardcourt in 1988, Wimbledon is the only major still played on grass.
The tournament takes place over two weeks in late June and early July, culminating with the Ladies’ and Gentlemen’s Singles Final, scheduled always for the second Saturday and Sunday of July respectively. Five major, junior, and invitational events are held each year.
In the men’s singles, the record co-holders for most victories are Pete Sampras (1993–1995, 1997–2000) and Roger Federer (2003–2007, 2009, 2012) with seven each. Björn Borg (1976–1980) and Roger Federer (2003–2007) co-hold the record for most consecutive victories with five.
In the women’s singles Martina Navratilova, known for her aggressive serve-and-volley style, won the women’s singles at Wimbledon a record nine times (1978–79, 1982–87, 1990).
