With the the 2019-20 fixtures having been released earlier today, the 72 clubs in the English Football League now know the various run-ins they will face throughout the season, which kicks off on the weekend of August 3 and comes to a close on Saturday May 2 2020.
The promotions and relegations across the three divisions have thrown up a whole host of new match-ups to get supporters excited about, from teams old and new meeting for the first time, to fierce rivals clashing once more.
Huddersfield, Fulham and Cardiff all dropped down from the Premier League into the Championship, with all three looking to bounce back to the top flight on the first time of asking. They take on Derby, Barnsley and Wigan respectively on the opening weekend of the season. Other standout ties on the opening weekend in the second tier of English football include League One Champions Luton hosting Middlesbrough – now managed by former Boro and England defender Jonathan Woodgate – and promotion hopefuls Bristol City and Leeds clashing on Sunday August 4.
In League One, recently relegated Ipswich and Bolton both begin their campaigns on the road at Burton and Wycombe respectively, whilst League Two winners Lincoln kick off the season at home to Accrington Stanley.
League Two‘s opening weekend sees National League Champions Leyton Orient begin the campaign with a home tie against Cheltenham, in what will be their first game since the sudden and tragic passing of their promotion-winning manager Justin Edinburgh. Salford City – owned by members of Manchester United‘s “Class of ’92” – start their first ever season in the football league at Stevenage.
