Having spent the majority of their history in the top tier of English football, Rovers are no strangers to the Premier League. The Blue and Whites were one of the league’s strongest teams in the 1990s, finishing in the top six in four of the new format’s opening six seasons.
This spell famously included The Riversiders only title of the Premier League era, which they won by a single point from rivals Manchester United. The headlines on the back page that season were dominated by the strike partnership of Chris Sutton and Alan Shearer, who scored 49 goals between them and are still fondly remembered as one of the finest front lines of the modern era.
Despite superlative Shearer’s departure from the club in 1996 and a dip in fortunes which saw the club briefly return to the First Division, Rovers quickly reestablished themselves in the Premier League following their promotion from the second tier in 2000. The following season saw them collect more silverware as they were triumphant in the League Cup.
Despite three top seven finishes in the next six seasons, Rovers were relegated during a poor campaign in 2011-12, which saw them pick up just 31 points. Blackburn are currently experiencing their longest tenure outside of the top flight since 1992, having not made an appearance in the Premier League since the final day of the 2012 season, when they lost 2-1 to 6th place Chelsea.
However, promotion from League One last season has given them some much needed momentum, and they currently look to be challengers for the play-off positions over the course of the season. You can get behind Rovers by following the Blackburn Rovers FC Fan Playlist.
