slowthai shares ‘Toaster’ from Mercury Prize-nominated debut record

To celebrate the news that his debut album Nothing Great About Britain has been nominated for the 2019 Hyundai Mercury Prize, slowthai has shared his new single ‘Toaster’.

Released in May, Nothing Great About Britain has become one of the most celebrated debut British albums in the last decade.

Serving up a refreshingly candid and brutally honest snapshot of 2019 Britain, slowthai has become the voice of a disenfranchised youth.

Listen to ‘Toaster’ by slowthai on the Shoot Music New Releases playlist on Spotify.

Standing alongside righteous anger and hard truths, it was his willingness to appear vulnerable that ultimately connected Nothing Great About Britain’s listeners to his compelling storytelling and as a result, the album has become a vital cultural document, testament to the healing power of music.

‘Toaster’ is one of the album’s most poignant moments as the 24-year old reflects on the highs and lows of his childhood.

The accompanying video adopts a docu-style approach, dynamically moving between part-narrative and part-performance.

The video fittingly sees slowthai return to his mum’s first home in Northampton and retrace his old well-trodden tracks around the house and garden, openly sharing memories of his life there.
