Having come through a tough 2020 like the rest of the sporting world, the Super League is back for what is set to be one of the biggest years in the sport’s history, with its 26th season followed by the 16th Rugby League World Cup in October, with England hosting the tournament for a record sixth time.
The 12 teams will compete across 27 Rounds – including a round pitting fierce rivals against each other in August and the Dacia Magic Weekend at St James’ Park in Newcastle on September 4th and 5th – for the right to reach the six team play-off bracket. Two will go on to the Grand Final at Old Trafford on October 9 for the right to be crowned Super League Champion.
St Helens go into 2021 as back-to-back champions after a closely fought 8-4 Grand Final victory over Wigan Warriors last November. They will be looking to clinch the hat trick this year for title number nine, which would make them the most successful side in the competition’s history.
Returning from last season with their own hopes of Grand Final glory alongside St Helens and Wigan are Castleford Tigers, Catalans Dragons, Huddersfield Giants, Hull FC, Hull KR, Leeds Rhinos, Salford Red Devils, Wakefield Trinity and Warrington Wolves.
They are joined by Leigh Centurions, who are back in the top flight of Rugby League for the first time since 2017. After Toronto Wolfpack ceased operations and were expelled from the Super League, the Greater Manchester-based Championship side were unanimously approved to join the league in 2021.
