About: Swim Deep

Birmingham hailing quintet Swim Deep recently announced details of their fifth studio album, Hum. Set for release June 19 via Submarine Cat Records, it’s the band’s heaviest, most adventurous, and most uplifting album in years and reunites them with The Coral’s Bill Ryder-Jones, who also produced 2024’s There’s A Big Star Outside.

Earlier this month the band shared the record’s first single, ‘Pieces Of You’ –  a defiant cut of alternative rock: roaring with clouds of distortion that bring a bite and rawness to its chiming melodies. They also announce a run of dates across the UK for later this year including two shows at London’s iconic and endangered Moth Club. Vocalist Austin, along with bassist Cav McCarthy, is a passionate supporter of the hometown Blues, who are chasing back-to-back promotions in EFL Championship after winning the League One title last season. You can listen to the band’s latest single on our Birmingham City fan playlist.

How did you come to support your club and what are your favourite memories from your time as a fan?

Austin Williams: When i moved to Birmingham at age 15, our house was just off Small Heath and about a ten minute walk from the ground and all my new friends were big bluenoses. Blues fans can be quite intense, but also some of the friendliest and funny people you will meet.

Who have been your favourite five players for the club?

AW: They would have to be:

– Nicola Zigic, or Big Zig: A huge Serbian who you could always rely on for a header. Scoring one as a shock opener against Arsenal in the League Cup final, which we went on to win.
– Lukas Jutkiewicz: Our loyal talisman and bagsman.

– Jay Stansfield: Our star boy, plays for the badge and is amazing everywhere on the pitch.
– Jude Bellingham: A Brummie boy. We retired his shirt after 44 appearances for our first team. As daft as that felt, it’s good to take that much pride in your homegrown players.
– Troy Deeney – Another bluenose, hates Villa, always reps Birmingham and has really done well for himself against all the odds of his turbulent and tough upbringing. Another pride of Birmingham.

What are your thoughts on how the 2025/26 season has gone so far for your club, and what are your hopes for the rest of this season?

AW: It started off very hopeful, although I think after the ten years we’ve had we’d be happy with a top half finish and good signings. I was worried the Hollywood lights and cameras would go to our heads but Chris Davies has been such a rock for the club and kept the ship steady. I reckon with our new very promising signings, if Wrexham stop being annoying and we keep up our unbeaten streak we’re in the play offs.

What’s going on for you as an artist at the moment?

AW: We’re currently at the start of releasing our fifth record, Hum, this summer. We have just recently come back from a Thailand/China tour and are going on a UK tour in September. Come see us!
