James Balke shares Dave collaboration from new album ‘Trying Times’

James Blake shares, 'Doesn't Just Happen', a collaboration with Dave and the centerpiece for his seventh studio album, Trying Times.

Marking a definitive new chapter in an already storied career for the Mercury Prize-winning artist and producer, the record serves as Blake’s first full-length independent release, issued via his own imprint, Good Boy Records.

Following their previous work on Dave’s acclaimed 2025 album The Boy Who Played The Harp, the duo returns with a track that shifts the atmospheric, introspective mood of the new album toward a more grounded, external perspective. Produced by Blake alongside Dom Maker and YouthXL, ‘Doesn’t Just Happen’ features Dave’s signature observational lyricism layered over a production that blends organic piano with sharp, UK-influenced rhythmic structures.

“Working with Dave always brings a different level of clarity to my music,” says Blake. “Where the rest of the album deals with internal tension and the fragility of modern life, this track feels more like looking out a window. It’s about the reality that growth and connection require more than just time—they require effort.”

Recorded at Real World Studios, the song is part of a broader narrative within Trying Times that explores the friction between global anxieties and private sanctuary. Music critics have already highlighted the collaboration as a pivotal moment on the record, noting how Dave’s presence provides a sharp, external counterpoint to Blake’s ethereal, “spectral soul” vocals.

Trying Times marks Blake’s first full-length project since departing the major label system. The album also features guest appearances from Monica Martin and the London Welsh Male Voice Choir, showcasing a return to Blake’s London roots after a decade spent in Los Angeles.

Following the experimental textures of 2023’s Playing Robots Into Heaven and his 2024 collaborative project with Lil Yachty, Bad Cameo, Trying Times finds Blake returning to London after a decade in Los Angeles. The 13-track collection reflects a period of deep introspection, exploring the friction between global anxieties and the search for private sanctuary.

In support of the release, James Blake has announced a worldwide tour. Following a string of North American dates, the European leg will commence in September 2026, including a highly anticipated homecoming performance at London’s O2 Academy Brixton.
