Art School Girlfriend shares the Kloyd remix of 'Out There', the first in a series of remixes of tracks from her latest album Soft Landing.
Off the back of last year’s incredible album, Soft Landing, Polly Mackey, aka Art School Girlfriend, is working with a number of close collaborators, both old friends and new, to create a remix for each and every track from Soft Landing, culminating in Hard Landing – the Remix album. The first remix comes from Kloyd, who has created an atmospheric, downtempo, electronica reimagining of ‘Out There’.
Kloyd said: “I was really honoured to have been asked by Polly to remix ‘Out There’. I felt a deep darkness to her vocals / lyrics that I resonated with a lot, along with a sense of acceptance + release – I wanted to translate that into a musical narrative. I wrote the end of the track first as I got hooked with her line “head in the sky cos it feels nice could you die happy tonight”. A line so beautiful I got addicted to and couldn’t stop listening to over and over again. I felt like I was falling from a sky which came out in the remix I think.”

Soft Landing followed Mackey’s 2020 debut album, Is It Light Where You Are? an album made in the wake of a tumultuous time and released during one. Soft Landing feels like Mackey’s true debut, a record of curiosity and playfulness with songs that sound like they are falling effortlessly into place.
Soft Landing is the culmination of Art School Girlfriend’s contemporary artistic testament. It represents a tonal shift and tenure in a much more contented and philosophical state of being. The title presented itself to her through the frequency illusion: a turn of phrase thrown up in overheard conversation, and mentioned on the news. “‘Soft landing’ showed up to strike me when things were falling into place,” Polly says. “I was at that typical moment where you’re leaving your 20s and realising you don’t have to work toward this concept of future happiness. Going to the pub with your mates can be the ultimate. Lying beside the person you love, watching the sun come in, can be it.”
