The Interview
SM: When did you begin DJ’ing for Minnesota Wild?
JT: My first season with the Minnesota Wild started in 2020.
SM: How did you initially get into the role?
JT: I got into the position thanks to one of my closest friends. He had the connection and thought I’d be a good fit and here we are! It’s a lot about who you know in this business and I am very blessed for the people in my life! I was also Justin Bieber’s first tour DJ and DJ’d Barack Obama’s first Inauguration. I’ve done some cool things in my DJ career.
SM: Can you remember your first ice hockey game/stadium experience as a kid?
JT: So I’m born and raised in Minnesota aka “The state of hockey” but I did not watch or go to a hockey game until I was well into my adult life and that was short lived because I only went to one game. I’m a skateboarder, so I’ve never really been into competitive team sports like that, but once I got the gig to be their official DJ and was at every game I fell in love with the sport and can confidently say I am a total hockey guy now. Who would have thought!? Not me! My first stadium experience was the Tony Hawk Boom Boom Huckjam at the Xcel Energy Center in 2003. Like I said, I’m a skateboarder!
SM: In your time with Wild, who’s the best player you’ve seen play for the team?
JT: It might seem like an obvious answer but Kiril Kaprizov. Dude is a BEAST!
SM: Who is your favourite artist/band of all time?
JT: Pharrell Williams.
SM: Which piece of music do you think is the ultimate track for motivating an ice hockey team?
JT: The players request Wiz Khalifa `We Dem Boyz’ or Avicii ‘Levels’ a lot, but there isn’t really a specific song I play to motivate. My sets differ every game, but my main focus when building my sets is to make sure my song selection fits the vibes the players ask for. I drop a lot of remix/mashups of popular songs, and so far they say they love the music! The players also like Lil Baby & Morgan Wallen a lot so it’s a mixture of rap, country, and EDM.
SM: Do you have an all-time favourite track that you play at Wild games?
JT: My favorite song to play at Wild games is The Isley Brothers – ‘Shout’. If it’s playing it means that we’ve just scored!
SM: What are the main songs used week in, week out in your sets?
JT: Disturbed – ‘Down with the sickness’, Mötley Crüe – ‘Wild Side’, Machine Gun Kelly – ‘Wild Boy’. Classic artists like Snoop Dog, Eminem, Avicii, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Guns N’ Roses, and Prince are regulars too.
SM: On a final note, are there any funny mishaps/cock-ups that have taken place that come to mind when you think about your career so far?
JT: Yes, during my first season with the Wild I accidentally hit my siren sample during the game while I was getting ready for my next intermission set and it was very loud, out of nowhere, and embarrassing. But it was a mistake and things happen, since then my DJ samples have been muted every game!
