The Interview
SM: When did you begin DJ’ing for Colchester United?
PS: 1996.
SM: How did you initially get into the role?
PS: I was working as a DJ in night clubs and at local radio. I was also a season ticket holder and was known to the club so they just invited me out of the blue.
SM: Can you remember your first football match/stadium experience as a kid?
PS: My brother took me to Ipswich Town v Newcastle and then against Manchester Utd. I remember seeing Malcom McDonald playing for Newcastle. George Best, Bobby Charlton and other great players appeared for Man Utd. We went to the station after to get a train home and Matt Busby was standing on the platform so I got his autograph. I was about 9 years old.
SM: Would you say your first experience of live football and the memories of that day were motivation for taking on your role at the club?
PS: I wouldn’t say it was something I expected when I was younger, but working for this club is special.
SM: In your time at Colchester, who’s the best player you’ve seen wear the famous blue strip?
PS: Lomana Lua Lua. He made skills look easy.
SM: Who is your favourite artist/band of all time?
PS: Honestly don’t think I can say, far too many to single one out.
SM: Which piece of music do you think is the ultimate track for motivating a footballing side?
PS: Music and teams evolve all the time. Far too tricky to single a particular track out but obviously something loud and lively.
SM: Do you have an all-time favourite track that you play at Colchester games?
PS: I’ve been the announcer for 27 years. If I played one particular favourite track it would be a bit boring for regulars.
SM: What are the main songs used week in, week out in your sets?
PS: The old favourites such as ‘Carnival de Paris’, ‘Boys Are Back In Town’ and ‘Freed From Desire’. I also like a new band called Archways. They remind me of U2 with the voice of Keane. Latest track from them is called ‘Canvas Sky’. Great stadium build up music.
SM: On a final note, are there any funny mishaps/cock-ups that have taken place that come to mind when you think about your career so far?
PS: I once had to apologise to the entire population of Huddersfield. Unfortunately my sense of humour comes out too quickly on occasions when I have the mic switched on. It’s only ever harmless banter though.
