Steve Mason unveils ‘Moss Side Fish Fry’ rework with OneDa

Steve Mason teams up with rising Manchester star OneDa to release ‘Moss Side Fish Fry’.

The single is a radical re-working of ‘Brixton Fish Fry’, a track taken from his much-acclaimed album Brothers & Sisters, which came out on Double Six in March of this year.

Talking about the track, which has been totally overhauled and given a musical re-boot with OneDa providing a completely new lyric & vocal, Steve said: “This is special. I have completely re-worked Brixton Fish Fry and was lucky enough to get Manchester’s OneDa to contribute some epic and deep verses to the finished version, now called Moss Side Fish Fry. Currently blowing up all over the place OneDa is a special talent and I’m privileged to have her on this new version.”

OneDa added: “I approached this track as I would do a spoken word piece, using my verses in a poetic form, deconstructing the meaning I took from Steve’s lyrics in the chorus. I’m really excited to have an opportunity to share this side of what I do.  The lyrics I write are of confusion and feeling lost in a world that ‘chews you up and spits you out’, not being quite sure where you or anyone else fits in and continuing the journey being fully aware of this. The video complements the words, it’s a straight up, animated performance walking through the streets of Manny.”

The track is accompanied by a video directed by Charlie Barclay Harris featuring OneDa shot around her native Manchester and Steve, who appears from a field far, far away.

Having played a run of headline shows in Spring of this year, including a sold-out Electric Ballroom in London, and announced a short tour in December, Steve has shared details of further UK dates as part of the annual Independent Venue Week in early 2024.

Mason’s most open, honest and vibrant solo album to date, Brothers & Sisters marries the personal and the political but does so in an emotive and uplifting manner. Written against a backdrop of fear and uncertainty, and at a time when those in charge lurched from one disaster to the next mismanagement with increasing regularity, Brothers & Sisters is in fact an incredibly joyous, even spiritual, listen.

With musical contributions from British gospel singers Evy Lee, Jayando Cole, Keshia Smith, Connie McCall & Adrian Blake and with Kaviraj Singh on the santoor it’s a record about bringing people together through art, music and culture.
