South London songwriter and producer Alice Barlow shares her recently released new single, 'Garden'.
In it Barlow sings: “Two steps backwards / Two steps forwards / Two steps / But it’s OK / It’s alright / We’re just fine / We’re just all / In a sea / That’s on fire.” Self-produced and recorded at home, it is lushly ambitious, holding domestic restlessness alongside the burden of care, set against a world in freefall… dogs reminding their owners to go outside while the world is burning.

Talking about ‘Garden’, Barlow says, “Garden is an important song to me. It’s about my deep love for nature and the world, and the collective denial of so many difficult things happening in it – climate change, genocide, war. It reflects on small things within daily life like dreams or walking my dog, and the dissonance of experiencing them with the backdrop of so much suffering. I made it in my own garden a couple of summers ago using just guitars and my voice, and making it was a cathartic experience – it became a vessel to process a lot of those feelings.”
The video is by Alice herself, adding, “It’s a collage of old family videos from the 60s, 90s and early 2000s shot by various members of my family. It’s a reflection on life, nature and all that comes with it.”
