Julia Holter shares, 'My Lost One', the enchanting new single from her forthcoming album, Materia, out August 21 on Domino.
“‘My Lost One’ is a witchy folktale inspired by children’s books with creepy rhymes and nonsense syllables, trees growing through living rooms, and animals doing things in clothes,” says Holter. “I imagine wildlife moving into my home, a superimposition of the outdoors and the indoors. I think about a squirrel cooking a meal on my stove. What are we conjuring, and what are we truly longing for?”
Additionally, Holter announces album playbacks in Los Angeles and London. The Los Angeles event, presented by KCRW, will be at In Sheep’s Clothing HQ on August 20 and will feature a playback of Materia in full as well as a Q&A with Holter and KCRW’s Director of Music Content Alejandro Cohen. Ticket proceeds from the event will go to the Immigrant Defenders Law Center.

Julia Holter blurs the boundaries between indie music, modern composition, and electronic music with free-flowing eloquence. On early releases such as 2011’s Tragedy, the Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter and composer combined bedroom recordings of droning electronics and distant vocals with inspirations as cultured as Euripides’ play Hippolytus.
After a string of dream pop albums that established her searching voice in independent music—from 2012 breakthrough Ekstasis to Loud City Song and Have You in My Wilderness—Holter released the sprawling and thrillingly experimental Aviary in 2018. Since then, she has scored films like Never Rarely Sometimes Always, performed a commissioned live score for The Passion of Joan of Arc with the Chorus of Opera North, and collaborated with her partner, the musician Tashi Wada, who plays synth and bagpipes on her new album. Something in the Room She Moves is a remarkable progression in Holter’s oeuvre, synthesizing her free, improvisatory energy with her signature eloquence.
