About: Black Lounge
Indie quartet Black Lounge operate in a space that feels like the halfway house between the raw emotions of Wunderhorse and the stylish anthemics of Arctic Monkeys. Previous highlights for the group include ongoing BBC Introducing support, multiple sold-out London gigs, and a sold-out FOMO Festival set.
Formed by vocalistGeorge Grant in 2024, their newly released single ‘Welcome Home’ starts a bold new era for the band with a whole new line-up now completed by Jack, along with Ben Gulik (guitar) and James Ladds (bass). The song is the first taste of their upcoming debut EP, playing with dynamics in a way that recalls early Radiohead or Muse, with a hook built for pints-in-the-air main stage festival singalongs.
How did you come to support your club and what are your favourite memories from your time as a fan?
Jack: My dad took me to my first Newcastle game when I was seven, it’s probably my best personal memory of the club. We beat Wolves 4-1 at St James’. It was my first time seeing the ground, and I ran into Peter Beardsley on the way out. That was a pretty good day.
Favourite memory has to be when we played a show in Liverpool on a matchday for the title run in. The team were away at Chelsea I think, but we went big in one of the supporter’s bars in the city centre and made about 400 new friends. Liverpool won and then we smashed the show. Dreamy day. We put Steve Gerrard on the guestlist but he never showed!
Who have been your favourite five players for the club?
Jack: [Alan] Shearer obviously, incredible player and iconic for us. Feel like I have to say Gazza as well just because he was untouchable with the ball and I know he’s the best player my dad has seen at the club.
The first player I got hooked on was Yohan Cabaye, he was a class player. Also, Papis Cisse was so good for us – that brace at Chelsea is still the best in Premier League history in my opinion, and that second goal is legendary. Most recently however it’s been Bruno Guimarães. He’s a great leader and believer in the club, genuinely loves the city, and he has been crucial to all of our success in recent years. He reads the game so well and his passing is clinical.
Honourable mention is Fabricio Coloccini, great captain and great chant.
What are your thoughts on how the 2025/26 season has gone for your club?
Jack: Honestly, I can’t wait for it to be over. It’s been such a drag of a season – thank god we managed to pick up some points early on or we would be right in this relegation fight now. I don’t see us getting much out of the remaining games.
It all went wrong with the [Alexander] Isak stuff and the squad hasn’t been able to recover the mentality of previous seasons. The players don’t care as much as they did before and I think we need lots of change in the summer if we want to get out of this state.
What’s going on for you as an artist at the moment?
Jack: A lot of exciting stuff. Loads of new music releasing soon, plenty of live shows about London and Essex, a few festivals and much more incoming. Our next gig is at Dingwalls 2 in Camden tommorow (Saturday 2 May).
