Ruger pays homage to Nigerian football icon on ‘Jay Jay’

Nigerian sensation Ruger returns with his latest single, 'Jay Jay', released today via Promised Land Records.

‘Jay Jay’ is a playful, high-energy Afrobeats-Dancehall anthem that draws inspiration from Nigerian football legend Jay-Jay Okocha, known for his dazzling footwork and unpredictable moves on the pitch. Ruger uses Okocha’s signature dribbling skills as a metaphor for his approach to relationships – and with tongue-in-cheek lyricism, he emphasises his preference for freedom, likening this to Okocha free-wheeling style during his prime in the Premier League.

The new single follows 2024’s ‘Toma Toma’, Ruger’s massive collaboration with Tiwa Savage, and is another preview into his highly anticipated second solo studio album, due later this year.

Africa’s Pace-setter, Ruger, was introduced to the world in January 2021, with the release of ‘One Shirt’. A song which brought his striking signature style to the world. Ruger fuses his confidence with an electrifying stage presence, fast becoming one of the most exciting stars in global music.

His momentum continues to build—he’s been nominated for Best African Music Act at the 2025 MOBO Awards, and last month, he delivered an electrifying BBC 1Xtra Live Lounge performance, where he performed ‘Toma Toma’ and covered ‘Mad Over You’ by Runtown.

In April, Ruger will kick off his US and European tour, with shows across the US from April 3 – May 10, followed by dates in Italy, Sweden, Belgium, Denmark, Austria, and Germany, with more to be announced.
