The Interview
SM: When did you begin DJ’ing for UCLA?
DF: I started with UCLA football in 2001. I’ve been DJ’ing for them at the Rose Bowl for three full seasons.
SM: How did you initially get into the role?
DF: My friend DJ Los was their previous DJ. He was no longer able to do it, so he asked if I was interested. I said yes without hesitation. It was always a dream of mine to be the DJ for a sports team, plus I grew up rooting for The Bruins. I had covered a lot of sporting events for Los and Vick One, so I had some experience with these type of events.
SM: Can you remember your first American football game/stadium experience as a kid?
DF: We didn’t have a pro football team in Los Angeles for most of my childhood, so my first pro football experience happened in my 20s. I took a trip up to Seattle to watch a Seahawks/Buccanneers game with one of my close friends. We had the greatest time and it’s still probably my best experience at an NFL Stadium to date. The fans in Seattle were so friendly and so full of energy.
SM: In your time with UCLA, who’s the best player you’ve seen play live?
DF: I’d say Dorian Thompson-Robinson and Zach Charbonnet. Both are players that are now in the NFL.
SM: Who is your favourite artist/band of all time?
DF: Nas and Linkin Park. I can listen to all their albums from front to back. I’ve also watched them live so many times.
SM: Which piece of music do you think is the ultimate track for motivating an American football team?
DF: I’d have to go with Zombie Nation “Kernkraft 400”. That track never fails in a big moment!
SM: Do you have an all-time favourite track that you play at UCLA games?
DF: Endor “Pump It Up” is an underrated track but always seems to work for me. It’s also a favorite of some of the staff at UCLA.
SM: What are the main songs used week in, week out in your sets?
DF: There are so many tracks, but here are some of the ones that stand out: 2pac “California Love”, RL Grime & 24hrs “UCLA”, Montell Jordan “This Is How We Do It”, Nipsey Hussle “Last Time That I Checc’d”, Linkin Park “Wretches & Kings”.
SM: On a final note, are there any funny mishaps/cock-ups that have taken place that come to mind when you think about your career so far?
DF: Recently I played a track thinking it was a time out, but i quickly was told that it wasn’t a time out. It was so loud with my music in one ear, the intercom in the other ear, plus the crowd noise, that I thought the producer mentioned it was a time out. That was pretty embarrasing but things like that happen. You just gotta be ready to adjust in the moment.
