Stadium DJ of the Week #81 – Jeff McGraw (DJ Quick Draw (Arizona Coyotes & Arizona Diamondbacks)

Welcome back to ‘Stadium DJ Of The Week’, where in each issue we put some serious and not so serious quick-fire questions to a stadium DJ from the world of sport! This week we sat down for a chat with Arizona Diamondbacks, and Coyotes’ DJ Quick Draw.

The Interview

SM: When did you begin DJ’ing for Arizona Diamondbacks, and Arizona Coyotes?

JM: I started DJ’ing for the Arizona Coyotes in 2006 and Arizona Diamondbacks in 2014.

SM: How did you initially get into the role?

JM: I was DJ’ing clubs and parties while I was in college at Arizona State University. Coming from Detroit, I was a huge Hockey fan. One day I noticed that there was an internship opportunity at the AZ Coyotes hockey club, so I jumped on it. During my internship season they lost their DJ. The Manager at the time knew I was a DJ and asked if I could fill in until they found someone. Little did they know they already found their DJ!

SM: Can you remember your first stadium experience as a kid?

JM: I remember my dad taking me to the old Detroit Tigers Stadium when I was a kid. I thought it was the coolest thing ever! Walking through the streets of downtown Detroit back then was thrilling enough but to actually see a game at that old stadium was awesome. I can still remember that smell of hot dogs, peanuts and dirty streets like it was yesterday.

SM: In your time with Diamondbacks and Coyotes, who’s the best player you’ve seen play live?

JM: Mr. Randy Johnson. Amazing pitcher and his walk out song was Seek and Destroy by Metallica… I loved that! I was also lucky enough to watch Wayne Gretsky coach the AZ Coyotes. It was awesome seeing such a legend skating in front of me daily.

SM: Who is your favourite artist/band of all time?

JM: SLAYER.

SM: Which piece of music do you think is the ultimate track for motivating a sports team?

JM: AC-DC – ‘Thunderstruck’ works for both Hockey and Baseball… although it’s an old tune, the players love it and it pumps them up. I re-edited the beginning to get the “Thunder” chant going.

SM: Do you have an all-time favourite track that you play at games?

JM: My all-time favourite song for the AZ Coyotes is “Howling For You” by The Black Keys because it’s our goal song! It truly makes me happy. But seriously, that is a very hard question… for hockey, I play up to 300 songs in one game. Lots of Hip Hop, EDM, Country and Latin but really I am one of those DJ’s that likes to keep the rock alive. So my answer would be, ‘WALK’ by Pantera.

SM: What are the main songs used week in, week out in your sets?

JM: EDM remix drops get a lot of play; they bring a ton of energy to the room. For example, Steve Aoki – ‘Boneless’, Wuki – ‘It’s Tricky Remix’, Tiesto – ‘Wow’ & Diplo – ‘Welcome to the Party’.

SM: On a final note, are there any funny mishaps/cock-ups that have taken place that come to mind when you think about your career so far?

JM: Mistakes are only funny when other people make them! Just playing. I absolutely hate when I think I hear a whistle at a hockey game and I hit play on a song only to look up and see them still playing. Man you can’t hide that one!

We’d like to say a huge thank you to Jeff for taking the time to talk to us. We wish him and all of  the Diamondbacks, and Coyotes’ players, staff & supporters the very best for the future.
