Welly are back with their brand new single and future indie-pop classic, ‘Skinny Boy’, out now on Submarine Cat Records.
Another observational masterpiece from one of his generation’s smartest pop minds. Simplistic storytelling that some of the best musical orators on anthropological behaviors would be envious of – Welly sees it, says it and sorts it into pop history; file under ‘indie-pop classic’.
Having immersed himself fully into writing and self-producing his debut album Big In The Suburbs, lead vocalist Elliot Hall loosely entertained the idea of working with external producers for a short while but didn’t quite find his match. Until, he decided to try and cold contact Ed Buller who had worked on Pulp’s His N Hers album in 1994. After some gentle persuasion and a few pints in the pub, Ed and Elliot bonded heavily and it was decided that this meeting of generations was the way forward for Welly’s next chapter.

‘Skinny Boy’ is the first installment of this exciting collaboration. Elliot explains, “Skinny Boy is about going to a club and being surrounded by a carbon copy of the same bloke 100 times, like the nightclub is a hall of mirrors, each with a ratty moustache and a Tate Britain tote bag. It’s dance, it’s punk, I’ve been trying to imagine Ray Davies of the Kinks singing on an Underworld beat.
“It was produced by Ed Buller, who made the Pulp and Suede records in the 90’s. As everything Welly has ever done has been homemade thus far, he took me kicking and screaming into a proper studio and the first result is (surely) already a classic!“
Welly’s debut album Big In The Suburbs was released in spring 2025 and was choc-full of terrifyingly whip-smart pop songs that celebrated all aspects of Great British Life, replete with the grit, mundanity, madness and beauty that it entails. An album for the everyman singing truths and observations that sometimes cut close to the bone but are all bandaged up with a perfect amount of cerebral humour.
